Bone Growth Stimulators
A bone growth stimulator is a medical device that helps promote bone healing by delivering electrical or ultrasonic signals to the fracture site.
Purpose
Fracture healing is a complicated metabolic process and is dependent on many factors. Healing fractures may be delayed or impaired if these factors are inadequate or interrupted. Most fractures heal without any complications. However, some patients develop nonunions and/or delayed unions, and are not healing on their own. A non-invasive option for these complications is a bone growth stimulator.
Used by Neurosurgeons and Orthopedists to promote bone healing in hard to heal patients with healing risk indications (smoker, diabetic, obesity, etc.), complex spinal surgeries (involving more than two vertebra), or non-union fractures of long bones (90 days of limited to no healing shown by radiograph from the initial injury date).
How They Work
Bone growth stimulators work by:
- Enhancing the activity of bone-forming cells (osteoblasts)
- Reducing the activity of bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts)
- Increasing blood flow to the fracture site
- Promoting the formation of new bone tissue
Benefits:
- Can improve bone healing in non-union or infected fractures
- May increase bone density in osteoporosis
- May reduce pain and disability associated with fractures
